Every family deserves fresh, clean drinking water. Unfortunately, the public water supply does not always provide the best tasting water, and your water supply may contain harmful contaminants, sediment, or even bacteria.

Pitchers with water filters can provide clean water, but they are not always convenient if you need a large amount of water. Bottled water is expensive, and the water quality is not always much better than tap water. Plus, using so many single-use plastic bottles is harmful to the environment.

A professionally installed water filtration system will provide your family with filtered water straight from your tap. Babe Plumbing has years of experience installing house filtration systems that use reverse osmosis.

Types of Water Filtering

There are several techniques for filtering bacteria, chemicals, and other contaminants from drinking water. Many systems use carbon filters that trap impurities as the water passes through them.

The downside to carbon systems is that you have to change the filter periodically, which adds to the cost of the system. If you don’t change the filter often enough, it can impact taste and water quality. Let’s go through the three main types of water filters available on the market today.

  • Carbon Filters

Carbon filters contain carbon (or charcoal) that allows water to pass through but traps some impurities. It does not remove viruses, bacteria, or heavy metals like lead or arsenic. The carbon filters eventually reach capacity and lose their ability to filter water. At that point, they need to be replaced. If not replaced, they could allow impurities into the water and negatively impact the taste of filtered water.

  • Reverse Osmosis (RO) Filtration

Reverse osmosis filters work by forcing water through a membrane. Bacteria, viruses, and some heavy metals cannot pass through the filter. RO filters should be changed every 1 to 3 years, depending on how often you use them and how much contamination the filter membrane removes.

In short, RO filtration systems are more effective and more convenient. However, large particles can clog RO filters.

  • Nanofiltration

Nanofiltration, like reverse osmosis, involves passing water through a membrane, only this membrane is extremely fine. Nanofiltration removes sodium and calcium ions, effectively softening water while also removing viruses, bacteria, and other contaminants.

Both nanofiltration and reverse osmosis remove more than ions from the water. If you are interested in filtering out bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, lead, and other toxins, feel free to contact our team for more details.

Whole-Home Water Filtration

When choosing a water filtration system, you have the option of using smaller systems that use water pitchers, add-ons to the kitchen tap, or a whole-home water filter that purifies water as it enters your home.

Instead of a piecemeal approach that leaves you and your family fighting over scarce pitchers and bottles of filtered water, the ideal choice is a whole home water filtration system. Whole-home water filtration provides clean water for showers, baths, face-washing, and cooking. Unlike pitcher filters, it does not restrict the amount of filtered water you can use at any given time.

Another advantage of whole-home water filtration is that the filtration system does not need to be close to the kitchen, freeing up valuable space for cooking. The system can be inside or outside the house, but it should be in the vicinity of the main water connection.

Benefits of Water Filtration

Water filtration is more economical than relying on bottled water and potentially safer than relying on the municipal water supply. The cost of a water filtration system, in particular a whole-home system, is minimal compared to the potential benefits.

Water filtration protects your family from the effects of pollution that can cause health issues for you and your family. Reverse osmosis filters can remove lead and other heavy metal contaminants that increase the risk for neurological problems, particularly in children whose brains are still developing.

Also, water filtration improves water taste, particularly when removing contaminants like sulfur that have a powerful odor. Water softening systems provide better tasting water as well by removing minerals that can affect its taste.

Water filtration can remove bacteria and viruses that transmit water-borne diseases. Municipal water systems chlorinate and treat their water to prevent disease, but pollution, chemical spills, and aging infrastructure leave American communities vulnerable to water supply contamination. Having a whole-home water filtration system puts you in control and gives you peace of mind.

Additionally, water filtration can remove mineral deposits found in hard water. These deposits can affect the taste of water, as well as build up on pipes and lead to corrosion, leaks, and shorter lifespans for appliances and plumbing fixtures.

Under-the-sink and kitchen water filtration systems improve the safety of drinking water and water used in cooking. Whole-home water filtration provides an extra layer of security for handwashing, showering, dishwashing, and other household activities.
